Lactalis, the company at the centre of the international Salmonella incident has promised to withdraw 12 million units of powdered baby milk from retail outlets in 83 countries. The recall affects its Picot, Milumel and Taranis brands. BBC News reported a week ago that some French retailers had admitted selling products that were supposed to be part of the recall. The news report said: Agriculture Minister Stephane Travert told reporters

"This is a major dysfunction in the withdrawal and recall by the operators, who bear responsibility,"
Looking at the European RASSF Portal the notification for the foodborne outbreak suspected (Salmonella Agona) to be caused by infant formula from France was issued on the 4th December 2017. There have as of writing this post been 53 updates to t…

Concern over speed of regulatory action: US and Europe

Following an internal review, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in the US Department of Health and Human Services has issued a statement online on 22nd December 2017 titled:

"The Food and Drug Administration's Food-Recall Process Did Not Always Ensure the Safety of the Nation's Food Supply"
These are very strong words. They reviewed documentation for 30 voluntary food recalls selected from the 1,557 food recalls reported to FDA between October 1, 2012, and May 4, 2015. They stated

The FDA did not always have an efficient and effective food-recall process that ensured the safety of the Nation's food supply. We identified deficiencies in FDA's oversight of recall initiation, monitoring of recalls, and the recall information captured and maintained in FDA's electronic recall data system, the Recall Enterprise System (RES).
Specifically, we found that FDA could not always ensure that firms initiated recalls promptly and that FDA did not always (1) eval…

Konjac - food ingredient, diet supplement or food safety hazard

It was only a year ago that I first heard of a product recall for konjac. Since then I have noted five food recalls for konjac in jelly cups; one in Canada and the rest in Australia one of which I blogged about today. In addition, the use of E425 konjac in all jelly confectionery, including jelly mini-cups, and the sale of such confectionery, is not permitted under EU Regulation 1333/2008.  The EU risk assessment for konjac has been recently updated. I didn't know much about konjac twelve months ago except that it is a plant native to Asia and is widely used in Asia for jelly products, as been attributed to multiple deaths from choking worldwide.

Konjac is promoted as a weight loss aid and also sold for example as a diet supplement in the UK and as a rice substitute although on the latter with a warning:

"Always consume with plenty of water, there is a risk of choking for people with swallowing difficulties or when consumed with inadequate fluid".
A food ingredient I wil…
