What did I not expect to blog about in 2017?

What did I not expect to blog about in 2017? Salmonella and puppies, undeclared sildenfil (viagra) recalls by the FDA in the US that is for sure. Fipronil - I know a lot more about the chemical now than at the start of 2017; so many Listeria outbreaks in North America a real challenge in 2017. Food fraud has really become a relevant, ever present issue in 2017 sausages in Canada; fish just about everywhere; substituted nuts with peanut as a cheaper alternative with sadly fatal results, olives problems still continue and so much more. I have been involved in the development of a lot of new knowledge that has been published this year and excitingly much more to be published in 2018.

What about 2018? Hopefully a reflection in the EU about the need for prompt recalls for both chronic and acute food safety hazards and some action taken to address the problem - this has also been highlighted as a need in the US in the last few weeks. Swift Beef Co., doing business as JBS USA Food Company, a Cactus, Texas establishment, is recalling approximately 4,702 pounds of beef stew product that may be contaminated with foreign matter , specifically plastic and metal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.

Dr Oetker recalls its Regal-Ice Ready Rolled Icing White because of undeclared nuts (almonds)

Dr Oetker is recalling its Regal-Ice Ready Rolled Icing White because some packs contain marzipan, which is not mentioned on the label. Product Safety Australia has issued a notice for undeclared allergens for the product above.

Identifying features Other Batch code 711142 and 711172; APN 9310645174556

What are the defects? The recall is due to the presence of undeclared allergens – fish and soy.

What are the hazards? Any consumers who have a fish and/or soy allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed.

Sainsbury’s recalls certain batches of its Taste the Difference 4 pack Aberdeen Angus British Beef Quarter Pounders (Frozen) due to a possible link to illness with E. coli O157

Public Health England has identified a small number of cases with E. coli O157 infection. Investigations have found a possible link to the above product. As a precautionary measure, Sainsbury’s is recalling certain batches of its Taste the Difference 4 pack Aberdeen Angus British Beef Quarter Pounders (Frozen). For more details follow the link.

CFIA recalls this week

Les Entreprises Simon & Nolan inc. ordered to pay $20,000 fine for violating Food and Drugs Act  On November 14, 2017, at the Laval courthouse, Les Entreprises Simon & Nolan inc. pleaded guilty to four counts of violating the Food and Drugs Act. The CFIA investigation determined that on or about December 9, 2014, the company sold extra virgin olive oil, 100% pure olive oil and 100% pure grapeseed oil in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive, or likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its nature, value, composition and merit.
