FDA and FSIS recalls this week - lots of recalls for Salmonella and whey powder

As a precaution, approximately 7,000 cases of Taco Bell Salsa Con Queso Mild Cheese Dip are being voluntarily recalled because the affected product is showing signs of product separation which can lead to a potential health hazard. This could create conditions that could allow for the growth of Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum).

Flowers Foods, Inc. (NYSE: FLO) is voluntarily recalling Swiss Rolls sold under the brand names Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square, and Great Value, distributed nationwide, and Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, due to the potential presence of Salmonella in an ingredient, whey powder.

FSAI Reiterates Advice to Boil Imported Frozen Berries

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reiterates its advice to consumers to boil all imported frozen berries for at least one minute prior to consumption. There remains an ongoing risk in the global imported frozen berry supply chain with a number of food alerts being issued across Europe for viruses in frozen berries this year. Imported frozen berries should be boiled for at least one minute before they are eaten. This precautionary measure will destroy any viruses if they are present and is particularly important when serving these foods to vulnerable people such as nursing home residents. Foodborne viruses can cause serious illness particularly in vulnerable people.

 Frozen imported berries are widely used in the food industry and distributed into the food service sector for use in cooked and ready-to-eat dishes. Cyclospora parasite in the news again

News items on Cyclospora are gaining pace in the US in recent days .. Food Safety News reports:

"The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has received confirmation of approximately 90 cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic Cyclospora parasite. Cases have been reported in counties across Illinois with people becoming ill starting in mid-May. The initial investigation indicates a link to consumption of McDonald’s salads produced for McDonald’s restaurants. Approximately one-fourth of Illinois cases reported eating salads from McDonald’s in the days before they became ill. The Iowa Department of Health has noted a similar increase in cases." It is now suggested in some media items that there are 100 cases.

According to the EFSA frozen corn and possibly other frozen vegetables are the likely source of an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes that has been affecting Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom since 2015.

The EFSA statement says:

"The same strains of L. monocytogenes have been detected in frozen vegetables produced by the same Hungarian company in 2016, 2017 and 2018. This suggests that the strains have persisted in the processing plant despite the cleaning and disinfection procedures that were carried out. Tillamook Country Smoker, LLC, a Bay City, Ore. establishment, is recalling approximately 102 pounds of ready-to-eat beef jerky products due to misbranding, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. The beef jerky products may contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) that is not declared on the finished product labels.
