Meat fraud in Belgium at Veviba - official report

This week there has been concern raised over fraudulent activity with regard to meat fraud in Belgium and mislabelling of product and category 3 animal byproducts. The Belgian Food Agency - FASFC has issued a press release - and the RASFF notification can be found here. Seven countries affected in the recall so far including the UK - comes hot on the heels of fipronil and recalls continue for fipronil in egg based products.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland have issued a recall for all minced lamb, diced lamb, diced beef and diced skinned chicken supplied by Hab Foods Limited trading as Haji Baba, Ballyfermot are subject to recall.

A Closure Order, under the FSAI Act 1998, was served on the food business operator by the HSE, due to a grave and immediate danger to public health. In addition, this business did not have the required approval to operate. A Prohibition Order, also under the FSAI Act 1998, was issued by the HSE regarding the recall and destruction of the above described meats.

Nature Of Danger: The unapproved establishment is unsuitable and unhygienic for the purposes of food production. There is a risk of the implicated meats being contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, which could cause illness.

Lidl Recalls Eridanous Squid Rings as the Cooking Instructions are Not in English

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued a recall:

Lidl Ireland is recalling the above batch of Eridanous Squid Rings as there is no English on the back of the pack. This means that the defrosting and cooking instructions may not be followed and there may be a risk to allergy sufferers (see food allergen alert 2018.A07).

The Double Cola Company is recalling approximately 200 cases of its Cherry SKI product because they are incorrectly labeled. Only the Cherry SKI products with the new design are being recalled, which were delivered to the southern Illinois, Evansville, IN and Winchester, OH markets. No other products of the Double Cola Company are being recalled. The newly designed cans of Cherry SKI are being recalled because the nutrition facts are incorrect. The cans show "Red #4" under ingredients, which is incorrect. The ingredients should include "Red #40" and "Yellow #5." These dyes may cause a reaction to anyone allergic.
