RASFF alerts - some of the notifications this week

RASFF notifications this week included:

Chemicals: too high sulphite in dried raisins from Chile, undeclared sulphite in cooked white beans from Spain; imazalil (1.7 mg/kg - ppm) in ananas from Benin; mercury (0.816 mg/kg - ppm) in chilled John dory (Zeus faber) from Morocco; high content of iodine (347 mg/kg - ppm) in dried algaes from South Korea;

  • undeclared gluten in spice mix Ras El Hanout from Spain; undeclared wheat in white pepper from Portugal; undeclared mustard in grounded white pepper from Germany

There were multiple biological hazards including:

  • Aflatoxins in corn from Russia; raw pistachios and unshelled almonds from the US; brazil nuts from Bolivia; roasted and salted pistachios from Belgium, with raw material from the US
  • Staphylococcus aureus and fungi in infant formula from the Netherlands 
  • Campylobacter coli (100 <-->8000 CFU/g) and Campylobacter jejuni (100 <-->8000 CFU/g) in chilled chicken breasts from France
  • Listeria monocytogenes in cooked prawns from Spain and cold smoked salmon slices from Poland; Listeria monocytogenes in chilled smoked salmon from Spain and smoked organic atlantic salmon from the UK, and gorgonzola mascarpone from Italy  
  • Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli in chilled bovine meat from Belgium and chilled boneless beef meat from Argentina; Escherichia coli in frozen cooked mussel meat from Chile
  • Salmonella in frozen boneless chicken legs , chilled turkey breasts and frozen chicken fillet from Poland; goat's raw milk cheese from France; chilled beef from Belgium and sesame seeds from Sudan; Salmonella group D in water spinach from Thailand; Salmonella enterica subsp. salamae (II) in pandan leaf from Thailand; Salmonella enterica ser. Poona (presence /25g) in rapeseed meal from Ukraine;

Foreign bodies including: porcelain pieces in pork pate from Belgium; metal wires in dried onions from India; dead insects in infant formula; plastic fragments in yogurt from Poland; glass fragments in granular sea salt from Israel; paint particles in sugar from Belgium

Processing and spoilage issues including: Spoilage of chilled red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) from Mauritius; Fermentation of bottles containing garlic sauce from the Netherlands

Packaging issues such as: migration of formaldehyde (290 mg/kg - ppm) and of melamine (9.3 mg/kg - ppm) from tumbler cups from China; colour migration (2,4-Diethyl-9H-thioxanthen-9: 0.2993 and 4-Phenylbenzophenon: 0.1044 mg/kg - ppm) from printed paper cups from the UK; migration of primary aromatic amines (78.85 µg/kg - ppb) from kitchen utensils from China

Unauthorised genetically modified (positive for 35S promoter of the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus) organic black rice noodles from China; unauthorised genetically modified (positive for 35S promoter of the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus) organic brown rice noodles from China; unauthorised genetically modified (Event 3272 (SYN-E3272-5)) corn flour from the United States
