E.coli: EU's rapid alert comes under scrutiny

Euractiv.com reports that bean sprouts from a north German farm tested negative for the E.coli under investigation on Monday (6 June), as EU health ministers meeting in Luxembourg considered changes to the bloc's rapid alert system.

EU Health Commissioner John Dalli confirmed after the meeting that the European rapid alert system for food scares ... Dalli said: "We are always in the process of improving our systems and I do not think that reform of the rapid alert system is needed, but rather an adjustment in order to ensure that the same pitfalls can be avoided in the future." He added: "We have to go by scientific proof. We need certainty before we make statements, because news travels fast and becomes public knowledge immediately. It can create a lot of fear and harm operators within the system."
