Chong Lee Market Pleads Guilty to Violating One Count of the Food and Drugs Act

On March 17, 2011, in British Columbia Provincial Court, 836883 Enterprises Ltd. also known as Chong Lee Market pled guilty to one count of violating the Food and Drugs Act.

The Honourable Judge Howard imposed a fine of $2,500.00, payable within 7 days against the Vancouver-based company. A Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation determined that the company was unlawfully selling a food product, specifically canned dace, which was adulterated with Enrofloxacin. This action violated Section 4(1)(d) of the Food and Drugs Act. Enrofloxacin is a veterinary drug that is approved for use by Health Canada but not in aquacultured fish.

The CFIA enforces federal legislation including the Food and Drugs Act and its Regulations. The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants, which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy, and access to international markets.
