Food safety is a given, when a consumer purchases food they expect it to be safe and fit to eat. The responsibility for ensuring food is safe to eat rests with the farmer (sometimes called the primary producer), the manufacturer or processor (if the food is prepared in a factory), the distributor and wholesaler (the people responsible for transfering the food from the manufacturer to the shop or to the door in the case of direct sales or mail order), the retailer and the consumer themselves.

Arkansas Firm Recalls Various Meat and Poultry Products Produced Without Inspection
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Petit Jean Farm, a Morrilton, Ark., firm, is recalling an undetermined amount of various meat and poultry products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. Hon Shen Ltd is recalling Nissin Food Holdings Ltd Spicy Beef Flavour Cup Noodles because it contains egg, wheat (gluten), milk and soya which are not emphasised correctly on the label. The means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to egg and/or wheat (gluten), and/or an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, and/or an allergy to soya.

There have been some unusual RASFF alerts this week including: cadmium (0.35 mg/kg - ppm) in chilled horse meat from Belgium; too high content of nitrate (4347.3 mg/kg - ppm) in baby spinach from Italy; dead mouse in canned black beans from Italy and 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) offered online for sale in the UK again.
