So Shing Hing (USA) Trading Co Ltd Issues an Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Dried Melon

The US FDA has issued a press release to confirm that So Shing Hing (USA) Trading Co Ltd is recalling DRIED MELON because the product was found to contain undeclared sulfites. Consumers who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. The recalled DRIED MELON was distributed in NYC Metro Area in 10 oz. clear plastic bags, with item number 520 and bar code number 4893230928048. The DRIED MELON is a product of China.
The DRIED MELON was sampled by a New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspector during a routine inspection. Subsequent analysis of the product by New York State Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in the 10 oz packages of DRIED MELON which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the DRIED MELON revealed they contained nearly 1200 ppm. No illnesses or allergic reactions involving this product have been reported to date.
