High Content of Benzoic Acid in a Batch of Dr Pepper

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has been informed by Coca Cola Hellenic Bottling Company that a batch of Dr Pepper carbonated fruit flavour soft drink in 500 ml PET bottles contained too much benzoic acid (E210). Benzoic acid is widely used as a food preservative and is permitted in such products at levels of 150 mg/l, but one batch of Dr Pepper was found to contain in excess of this amount. There are no adverse health risks from normal consumption of the implicated batch. The implicated batch is no longer on sale in shops.

The UK Food Standards Agency has also issued a Food Alert for Information. Coca Cola Hellenic Bottling Company is contacting all its customers who received the affected Dr Pepper to make sure it is withdrawn. The affected bottles have only been distributed in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and no other batches of Dr Pepper are known to be affected. The product being withdrawn is:
Product: Dr Pepper (500ml)
Batch codes: KH42315L91807 to KH42359L91807 and KH40000L91907 to KH41120L91907
