Queensland Health is warning against consuming a batch of salami made by smallgoods company Backa Australia, after samples were found with high levels of bacteria.The company based in Beenleigh, in Queensland, has begun a voluntary recall of its chabi salami products sold at farmers markets in Brisbane and the Gold Coast last weekend (14-15 January 2012).The salami product tested positive to staphylococcus bacteria which can cause a type of food poisoning.Consumers who purchased the chabi products from farmers markets at Rocklea, Ascot, Chandler, Nerang, Palm Beach, and the Southport Sharks Club last weekend are advised not to consume them.

A statement released by Queensland Health said, “While there is no reason to suspect other products of Backa Australia are also contaminated, all retail sales have been suspended until further tests can be carried out.”Queensland Health Acting Chief Health Officer Professor Michael Cleary said staphylococcal food poisoning can cause a sudden onset of nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. He also said that dehydration can occur, especially among infants, pregnant women or in the elderly if untreated.The incubation period for staphylococcal food poisoning is commonly 30 minutes-8 hours, usually 2-4 hours, although in some cases could be longer. The severity of illness depends on how much contaminated food is consumed, how much of the toxin is ingested, and the general health of the consumer.Professor Cleary said, “Those who purchased Backa Australia chabi last weekend are advised to throw it out as it is unsafe or return it to the supplier for a refund.“The ingestion of the contaminated hot salami could pose serious health risks and should not be consumed.”The Backa Australia chabi is unpackaged and not labelled.Queensland Health has notified Food Standards Australia New Zealand about the food recall.

RSW Distributors, LLC, a Forest City, N.C., establishment is recalling approximately 3,104 pounds of seasoned diced beef products that may contain foreign materials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced.

The problem occurred as a result of a conveyor belt being damaged during production. FSIS determined that the products produced may have contained small pieces of the belt and that those products were detained per FSIS instructions but inadvertently shipped into commerce later. FSIS and the company have received no reports of consumer complaints or reports of injury or illness at this time.

Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion discovered the issue during testing of its products by an independent laboratory. Laboratory testing has confirmed that certain products processed in the shred line contained Listeria monocytogenes. Therefore, other products produced on the same line, even if they have been tested and found to be negative, have the potential to be contaminated.Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion has contacted the FDA and issued the recall. Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion has ceased the production and distribution of the products as FDA and Alpine Slicing continue their investigation into the matter. All remaining inventory has been quarantined.

New research identifies norovirus levels in oysters

Research published by the Food Standards Agency shows that a significant proportion (76%) of oysters tested from UK oyster growing beds contained norovirus. The virus was detected at low levels in more than half of the positive samples (52%).

It is difficult to assess the potential health impact of these findings, as the available research techniques are not able to differentiate between infectious and non-infectious norovirus material within the oysters. Furthermore, a safe limit for norovirus has not been established.
Between 2009 and 2011, scientists from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), on behalf of the Food Standards Agency, took samples from 39 oyster harvesting areas across the UK. More than 800 samples of 10 oysters each were tested.
The research will contribute to a European Food Safety Authority review of norovirus levels in oysters, which will advise the European Commission on setting a specific legal safe level for norovirus in oysters placed on sale in the EU. The Agency and the shellfish industry are also continuing to work together to develop controls for norovirus.

Andrew Wadge, Chief Scientist at the Food Standards Agency, said: ‘This research is the first of its kind in the UK. It will be important to help improve the knowledge of the levels of norovirus found in shellfish at production sites. The results, along with data from other research, will help us work with producers to find ways to reduce the levels of norovirus in shellfish, and work within Europe to establish safe levels.

‘Though oysters are traditionally eaten raw, people should be aware of the risks involved in eating them in this way,’ he explains. ‘The Agency advises that older people, pregnant women, very young children and people who are unwell should avoid eating raw or lightly cooked shellfish to reduce their risk of getting food poisoning.’

David Lees, the lead investigator at Cefas, said: ‘We were fortunate to have excellent cooperation from the oyster producers and from local authority officers in conducting this study. Norovirus is a recognised problem for the sector, and this study provides important baseline data to help the industry and regulators to focus on the key risks.’

The product for retail sale is packaged in a 10-ounce, clear plastic package marked with a Front Row Produce “Grape Tomatoes” label on the top of the package. Currently, the lot number does not appear on the clear plastic package but it does appear on the case label. The lot numbers on the cases containing the 10-oz. packages are 2310802, 2310405, or 2510401. The 10lb bulk grape tomatoes are packaged for wholesale in a plain brown cardboard box labeled only with lot # 2310801.As of 12/1/2011, all shipments of Front Row Produce Grape Tomatoes packaged in clear 10-oz. plastic packages sold in retail stores will now have a green lot number sticker placed on the bottom side of each package. The lot number will consist of a 7-digit number used to aid in identifying specific shipments of product. People warned not to drink Drop Vodka

The Food Standards Agency is warning consumers not to drink an illegal brand of vodka called Drop Vodka, which has been found on sale in some shops.Consumers are advised not to drink the vodka because it is not registered by any company in the UK and could be harmful. Usually, food and drink goes through rigorous testing before it is placed on the market but because 'Drop Vodka' is not registered, it has not been through this process, so the Agency cannot be sure what is in the product.

Tests carried out by local authorities have identified the presence of Propan-2-ol and methanol in some of the vodka, and other substances that could harm people’s health.Colin Houston, Head of Incidents and Food Fraud at the Food Standards Agency, said: 'We urge consumers not to buy "Drop Vodka". It may be cheap, but people have got to ask if it is a price worth paying if their health could be at stake. We are working closely with local authorities to catch these criminals who are trying to profit by putting people’s health at risk.'

Other tests have found that the product does not contain enough alcohol to be called vodka. Legally, vodka should contain no less than 37.5% alcohol but ‘Drop Vodka’ has levels of 28.6% alcohol. There are also some labelling issues with ‘Drop Vodka’, particularly the lack of producer’s details, which are needed to ensure that the vodka is fully traceable.If consumers discover any 'Drop Vodka' on sale, they should contact their local authority or call the Food Standards Agency food fraud hotline on 020 7276 8527.

To date, the illicit bottles of vodka have been found on sale in England and Wales, specifically in the towns of Scunthorpe, Norwich, Wakefield, Leeds, Salford, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Milton Keynes, Potters Bar, Aldershot, Colchester and Cardiff, though it could be on sale throughout the UK. 'Drop Vodka' has been found on sale in small independent retailers, corner shops, petrol stations and so on, but there is also concern that pubs and clubs may have been targeted.The FSA has alerted local authorities about this issue and asked them to investigate and ensure that 'Drop Vodka' is removed from sale in their areas.
