The Fine Seafood Company recalls packs of smoked salmon

The Fine Seafood Company has recalled its 'Whiskey Cured and Oak Smoked' Smoked Salmon (70g, grey packs only) because of high levels of Listeria monocytogenes. This is a bacterium that can cause illness in certain groups of people, such as pregnant women, unborn and newborn babies, and anyone with reduced immunity, particularly the over-60s. The FSA has issued a Product Recall Information Notice.

Pesticide residue adherence rates above 97% for third consecutive year reports EFSA

Over 97% of samples tested in the latest Europe-wide monitoring programme of pesticides in food contain residue levels that fall within permissible limits, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). These results are part of the fifth annual report on pesticide residues in food in 27 EU Member States, Norway and Iceland. The report by EFSA’s Pesticide Unit is based on the analysis of more than 79,000 food samples carried out by national food authorities in 2011.

Plum Baby Foods recalls Plum Bread & Butter Pudding

The UK FSA report that Plum Baby Foods is recalling pouches of its Plum Bread & Butter Pudding with a 'best before' date of 15 January 2015. This is because of the product being under-processed, which may cause food spoilage as well as make it possibly unsafe to eat.

The Engine Shed recalls various batches of their vacuum-packed Organic Tofu due to a potential risk of botulism

Various batches of vacuum-packed Organic Tofu have been produced with inadequate controlling factors to prevent the growth and toxin production of Clostridium botulinum. This may cause a serious form of food poisoning called botulism. A recall from customers is being carried out as a precautionary measure.

H R Jasper & Son Limited prosecuted

H R Jasper & Son Limited, a red meat slaughterhouse based near Launceston, Cornwall, has been ordered to pay almost £9,000 in fines and costs for failing to remove specified risk material (SRM) from sheep carcasses destined for the food chain. SRM is the parts of cattle, sheep and goats most likely to carry BSE. All SRM must be removed in either the slaughterhouse or, in certain circumstances, cutting plant. It must not enter the food chain. The company entered not guilty pleas on six charges and, following a two day hearing, was convicted on all counts.

Unilever has withdrawn three varieties of Slimfast Meal Bars because some packs have been packed into incorrect boxes, and the presence of wheat and oats (gluten) and peanuts are not mentioned on the label. This makes the product a possible health risk for anyone who has an allergy or intolerance to wheat, oats or gluten and/or an allergy to peanut.
